But Lisa Kudrow's real life after Friends has been very different from Phoebe's.

And at 63, Kudrow is still very much working.

So, Where Is Lisa Kudrow Now?

Kudrow has never been the kind of former sitcom star who desperately tries to recreate the past.

Instead, she gradually built a career around unusual comedy, producing, writing and more character-driven projects.

One of her most important post-Friends projects was The Comeback, the HBO comedy in which she plays Valerie Cherish, a former television actress desperately trying to stay relevant in Hollywood.

It is almost impossible to imagine a more appropriate role for someone who became globally famous as Phoebe Buffay.

And now, years after the original series, Kudrow has returned as Valerie for the third and final season of The Comeback.

The new season has given her another opportunity to explore the strange relationship between fame, television and the fear of becoming forgotten.

Interestingly, the story even touches on the modern Hollywood obsession with artificial intelligence and AI-generated entertainment.

But Kudrow's 2026 isn't only about The Comeback.

She is also returning to another character from her past.

Romy and Michele Are Coming Back

Nearly three decades after Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino are getting back together.

The actresses recently appeared at Disney's D23 event to promote the upcoming sequel, with both returning to their iconic roles.

The new movie is currently in production and is expected to be released on Hulu.

The Journey That Had Nothing to Do With Serbia

There is a story circulating online that Lisa Kudrow travelled to Serbia while searching for her family roots.

There is, however, no reliable evidence that this happened.

Her documented ancestry journey took her instead to Belarus and Poland, and the story she uncovered there was far more painful than a simple genealogy trip.

Kudrow's father's family came from Eastern Europe, with Belarus playing an especially important role in her ancestry.

Her paternal grandmother, Gertrude, had grown up with a terrible family story.

When Lisa was a child, her grandmother told her that her parents had been murdered during the Holocaust.

Kudrow was very young when she first heard it. She later explained that she didn't initially understand what the Holocaust meant or even fully comprehend that children could be deliberately killed. The memory, however, stayed with her for decades.

Eventually, that childhood memory became part of one of the most emotional episodes of Who Do You Think You Are?

Lisa Kudrow Goes Looking for Her Great-Grandmother

Kudrow became involved with the American version of Who Do You Think You Are?, the genealogy series that follows celebrities as they investigate their family histories.

Her own episode was particularly powerful because it wasn't simply about discovering an interesting ancestor.

She was trying to understand what had happened to her great-grandmother, Mary, and the family she had left behind.

Kudrow travelled to the region of Ilya in present-day Belarus, where her ancestors had lived.

Standing there was an extraordinary experience.

She had heard her grandmother describe the beauty of the place when she was growing up. Now she was physically standing in the landscape that her grandmother had remembered.

For Kudrow, it created an almost surreal connection between generations.

The place looked remarkably similar to the picture she had carried in her imagination.

But behind that beauty was a devastating history.

The Jewish community of Ilya had been almost completely destroyed during the Holocaust, and Kudrow's great-grandmother was among those murdered.

The Moment She Realized What She Was Walking Toward

Perhaps the most haunting part of the journey came when Kudrow learned exactly where she was walking.

She was being taken along a road toward a location associated with executions.

At first, she hesitated.

She later described realizing that she wasn't simply walking through an old village or visiting a historical location.

She was walking toward the place where members of her own family had been taken to their deaths.

And that changed the meaning of the entire journey.

Kudrow has spoken about the importance of “bearing witness” — not simply because it was her family history, but because there are still people who deny or question what happened during the Holocaust.

For her, remembering became an obligation.

It was no longer just genealogy.

It was memory.

What Happened to Her Family?

One of the most surprising discoveries was that not every part of the family story ended in tragedy.

Kudrow discovered that a relative named Yuri had survived and eventually built a relatively peaceful life behind the Iron Curtain.

That discovery allowed her to tell her father something he had not known.

Her father was eventually able to reconnect with Yuri, using the technology available at the time.

For Kudrow, that may have been one of the greatest gifts to come from the entire journey.

She wasn't simply learning about dead relatives.

Today, Kudrow appears to be in a very different stage of her career.

She is no longer trying to prove that she can be a television star. She already did that.
