Sadie Sink Is Bringing the ’80s Back — and Making It Look Cool Again

There is something about the 1980s that refuses to disappear.

Big shoulders, fitted denim, bold jackets, red lipstick, voluminous hair and clothes that actually have some personality are finding their way back into fashion — and one of the young actresses making the look feel surprisingly fresh is Sadie Sink.

At just 24, the American actress has already built a career that many performers twice her age would envy. She became internationally recognizable as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, but her appeal goes beyond the Netflix phenomenon. Sink has also appeared on Broadway, in films such as The Whale and Fear Street, and in Taylor Swift's All Too Well: The Short Film.

The ’80s Influence Is Real

For Sink, the 1980s aren't simply a costume from Stranger Things. The decade has influenced the way she approaches fashion outside the show as well.

Her everyday wardrobe has included fitted jeans, 80s-style blazers, heels or sneakers and touches of classic makeup such as red lipstick. She has also spoken about the influence of 1980s couture seen in Stranger Things, including the strong shoulder silhouettes that became one of the decade's signature looks.

And that's probably why her retro looks don't feel like Halloween costumes.

Stranger Things deliberately uses the decade's clothing, hairstyles and pop-culture references to establish its world. Max's wardrobe in particular draws heavily from the casual California style of the period — denim, colourful tops, athletic pieces and relaxed silhouettes.

But Sink has gradually developed her own version of that aesthetic.

Her red hair certainly helps. So does her ability to make relatively simple clothes look distinctive.

Instead of chasing every new microtrend, she often looks as though she has taken something from an old fashion magazine, changed one or two details and made it her own.

With Stranger Things now part of television history and Sink continuing to take on new film and theatre projects, her fashion evolution is becoming almost as interesting to watch as her acting career.

The 1980s may have been four decades ago.

But judging by Sadie Sink's wardrobe, they're definitely not finished yet.
