Energy Drinks: Do We Really Need That Much Energy?

We live in a world that seems to be permanently tired.

We wake up early, work long hours, exercise when we can, stay awake late and then wonder why we need something to give us "energy" the next morning.

That is where energy drinks come in.

They promise alertness, focus and a quick boost when our natural energy seems to have disappeared. But there is an interesting question we rarely ask:

Do we actually need all that extra energy — or are we simply borrowing energy from the future?

And perhaps even more importantly, what happens inside the body when that quick boost comes from caffeine, sugar and other stimulating ingredients?



How Much Energy Do We Actually Need?

Before talking about energy drinks, it is important to understand what "energy" means.

Our bodies need energy every day to keep the heart beating, the brain working, the muscles moving and all the basic processes of life functioning.

That energy comes primarily from food and is measured in calories or kilojoules.

But an energy drink doesn't necessarily give you the kind of energy your body actually needs.

A sugary energy drink can provide calories because it contains carbohydrates in the form of sugar. But the feeling of suddenly becoming more awake is usually associated much more with caffeine stimulating the nervous system than with the calories in the drink.

In other words, you may feel more energetic without actually having solved the reason you were tired.

You may simply have temporarily pushed your tiredness into the background.

The Caffeine Effect

Caffeine is one of the main reasons people reach for energy drinks.

It stimulates the central nervous system and can increase alertness while reducing the feeling of sleepiness. EFSA considers single doses up to 200 mg of caffeine generally safe for healthy adults, while total daily intake from all sources also matters.

The problem is that caffeine isn't always consumed alone.

Someone might have an energy drink in the morning, coffee later, another energy drink in the afternoon and perhaps cola or pre-workout before exercising.

Suddenly, the total caffeine intake can become much higher than expected.

And the body doesn't care whether the caffeine came from coffee or an attractive can of an energy drink.

It all counts.

What Happens to Your Heart?

This is where the subject becomes more serious.

Energy drinks can temporarily affect cardiovascular function. Research has found increases in blood pressure and cardiac output after consumption, while other studies have reported changes in heart rate and electrical activity of the heart.

For a healthy adult who occasionally consumes a moderate amount, that does not automatically mean something dangerous will happen.

But people are not identical.

Someone with an existing heart condition, high blood pressure or a predisposition to abnormal heart rhythms may have a different response.

Large amounts of caffeine can cause palpitations, rapid heartbeat and increases in blood pressure, and serious cardiovascular effects are more concerning with excessive consumption.

This is also one reason why combining energy drinks with intense exercise or alcohol deserves particular caution.

The idea that a drink can simply "give you energy" sounds harmless.

Your cardiovascular system may see things somewhat differently.



And What About Taurine?

Taurine is probably one of the most misunderstood ingredients in energy drinks.

It is often portrayed online as something dangerous or unnatural, but taurine is actually a compound naturally found in the human body and in various foods.

So should we be frightened by it?

Based on current evidence, not necessarily.

EFSA previously evaluated taurine specifically in the context of energy drinks and concluded that exposure through regular consumption did not present a safety concern at the levels assessed. The authority also noted that reports of acute problems associated with energy drinks could not be confidently attributed to taurine itself; high caffeine intake was considered a more plausible explanation in some cases.

That doesn't mean "more is better."

It means we should be careful about blaming taurine for effects that may actually be caused by caffeine or the combination of several ingredients.

Interestingly, recent research has even investigated possible cardiovascular benefits of taurine, although the evidence is still developing and does not mean that taurine-containing energy drinks are healthy.

The important distinction is this:

Taurine itself should not be confused with the overall effect of an energy drink.

The Sugar Problem

There is another ingredient that deserves far more attention: sugar.

Some energy drinks contain substantial amounts of added sugar. And unlike caffeine, sugar actually contributes significant calories.

The World Health Organization recommends keeping free sugars below 10% of total daily energy intake, with a further reduction below 5% potentially providing additional health benefits.

A large sugary drink can therefore consume a significant part of your recommended daily free-sugar allowance without making you feel particularly full.

And that creates a problem.

You drink the calories.

Then you eat your normal meals anyway.

Over time, this can contribute to excessive calorie intake and weight gain. WHO specifically notes that sugar-sweetened beverages are associated with unhealthy weight gain.

Can Energy Drinks Raise Blood Sugar?

Yes.

If an energy drink contains sugar, drinking it can raise blood glucose because the body absorbs the carbohydrates in the beverage.

For a healthy person, the body normally responds by releasing insulin and bringing blood glucose back toward its normal range.

The bigger concern is repeated high intake of sugary beverages, particularly as part of an overall diet high in free sugars and calories.

Over time, excess calorie intake and weight gain can increase the risk of metabolic problems, including type 2 diabetes. WHO identifies overweight and obesity as important risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Sugar-free energy drinks are different in this respect because they don't provide the same amount of sugar or calories.

But "sugar-free" doesn't mean "risk-free."

Caffeine and other stimulating ingredients are still present.

Can Energy Drinks Cause Cancer?

This is probably the question that worries people most.

The short answer is:

There is currently no good evidence that drinking ordinary energy drinks directly causes cancer.

It would be misleading to tell people that a can of an energy drink is a proven cause of cancer.

However, there is an indirect issue worth understanding.

A diet consistently high in added sugars can contribute to excess calorie intake and obesity. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of several types of cancer. The National Cancer Institute also emphasizes that simply eating sugar does not directly make cancer grow or prove that sugar causes cancer.

So the relationship is much more complicated than:

"Sugar = cancer."

A more accurate way of looking at it is:

Too much sugar → excess calories and possible weight gain → obesity-related health risks, including increased risk of some cancers.

That is a very different statement.

The Real Problem May Be the Habit

Perhaps the biggest problem with energy drinks isn't one particular ingredient.

It's the habit.

If someone occasionally drinks one when they have a long day, that is very different from drinking several cans every day simply to function.

The second situation can become a cycle.

You sleep too little.

You drink caffeine to stay awake.

The caffeine affects your sleep.

You wake up tired.

You drink more caffeine.

And the cycle continues.

Eventually, the drink isn't really giving you extra energy.

It's helping you compensate for a lack of sleep.

Are They Ever Useful?

Energy drinks aren't automatically evil.

Caffeine can improve alertness and reduce sleepiness, and some research suggests energy drinks can improve certain aspects of physical performance.

But there is a huge difference between occasionally using caffeine and relying on highly caffeinated drinks every day.

Water is still the fundamental drink for hydration.

Food is still the fundamental source of nutrition.

And sleep remains one of the most effective ways of restoring the energy we constantly try to replace with stimulants.

The Bottom Line

Energy drinks are a fascinating example of modern convenience.

They can make us feel awake when we're tired, focused when we're distracted and ready to continue when our body is asking for rest.

But that feeling doesn't necessarily mean we've created energy.

We've often just changed how tired we feel.

The biggest concerns are generally related to high caffeine intake, cardiovascular effects, excessive sugar and repeated consumption, rather than the simplistic idea that one ingredient such as taurine is secretly poisoning the body.

And when it comes to cancer, there is no reason to claim that energy drinks directly cause cancer. The more realistic long-term concern is what frequent sugary-drink consumption can do to body weight and metabolic health.

Perhaps the most useful question isn't:

"Which energy drink is the healthiest?"

Maybe it is:

"Why am I so tired that I need one in the first place?"

Sometimes the answer isn't another can.

It is simply more sleep, better food, enough water and a body that finally gets the chance to recover.
