Duda Lisboa: The Brazilian Beach Volleyball Star Who Grew Up on the Sand

There is something about Brazilian beach volleyball that makes it almost impossible to separate the sport from the country itself.

The sun, the sand, the ocean, the crowds and the incredible athletes have made Brazil one of the most recognizable countries in the world when it comes to beach volleyball.

And among the new generation of Brazilian stars, Duda Lisboa has become one of the names people simply cannot ignore.

At 28, she already has an Olympic gold medal, World Championship success and years of experience at the highest level of the sport.

But her story didn't begin with an Olympic stadium or a packed international tournament.

It began much earlier.

And, in a way, it began with her mother.

She Was Practically Raised Around Beach Volleyball

Duda, whose full name is Eduarda Santos Lisboa, was born in Brazil in 1998.

Unlike many athletes who discover their sport completely by accident, Duda grew up around beach volleyball.

Her mother, Cida, played on the Brazilian circuit herself.

As a child, Duda travelled with her mother to tournaments and spent a lot of time around players, coaches and the beach volleyball environment.

Imagine growing up with that as your normal childhood.

For most kids, going to the beach means swimming, playing in the sand and eating ice cream.

For Duda, the beach was also a place where she could watch some of Brazil's best athletes compete.

And she was paying attention.

According to the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Duda learned from the best players around her and gradually developed her own love for the sport.

It wasn't long before people realized that she wasn't simply the daughter of a former player.

Then Came Ana Patrícia

Beach volleyball is different from most team sports.

There are only two players on the court.

That means the relationship between teammates matters enormously.
